We visited the historic Redstone test site and went inside the Payload Operations Integration Center, where we saw people monitoring the science experiments on board the International Space Station. You have the amazing history, one of 3 places in the United States you can see a Saturn V rocket, one of a dozen places to see an Apollo command module, plus unique features such as the Apollo 13 Lunar Module trainer, the Apollo 12 crew quarantine trailer and a nicely sized moon rock. I wouldn't want to do this stop without including the bus tour, and they sold out within 1 hour of opening on the Saturday in February when we visited (not exactly peak visiting time!) Of course, the Saturn V is the most impressive, but it was neat seeing the Chinook helicopter, the Atlas rocket, the Hawk missiles, etc. Outside, between buildings, are several displays of rockets, missiles, and aircraft. There is a fun kids' play area which our toddlers enjoyed! They spent the majority of their time in this area with their grandma while the rest of us went on the tour. She was extremely knowledgeable about space exploration history and was able to answer all our questions. In this building, we took a 45-minute tour and were very impressed with the guide.

The other building is the Davidson Center for Space Exploration, which contains one of only three Saturn V rockets left in existence! This hall is packed full of excellent exhibits and displays, starting with the history of Von Braun's V2 rocket and spanning through history to modern times (the ISS). The first building contains an exhibit called, "Dare to Explore: The Frontiers of Space." This exhibit showcases both former and current technologies of space exploration, from the space suits of the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions to a 1/10th scale mock-up of ULA's Vulcan rocket. 10 Space Camp alumni have even become real astronauts.We took relatives here on their first visit to Huntsville, and we all had a great time!
